Fantasies of the Conscious Hero

Lav Diaz’ eight-hour eulogy is only but a historical fantasy. The search for Andres and Rizal’s El Filibusterismo comes to life into a tragedy of the Philippine Revolution; under Diaz' 'one frame, long take' ideological regime, Hele attempts to posit the impossibility of a national redemption of its lost soul. Being a historical fantasy however, the film not only forces the audience to share the characters' being-in-the-world; the film equally enables a fantasy to them.
